What do we believe?

Our methodology

Translation is not a one dimensional process of transforming individual words into another language. Unless a translation reads as naturally to its intended audience as an original piece of writing in the target language, the end result can be nothing more than average. This is where our approach to freelancing comes in. Our translations are systematically checked for accuracy, completeness and style by the other member of the team. In practice, this means that the initial translation is done by either Vicky or Peter, depending on the subject area, content and style of the document. This draft is then proofread by the other person and finally reviewed again by both translators. All projects are archived for future reference.

We believe that our assiduous approach to translation is largely responsible for the considerable amount of repeat work we continue to receive. Our professional commitment to quality work results in well-researched and natural-sounding translations. Efficient and reliable, we have never missed a deadline. Above all, we enjoy what we do.

CAT tools

Computer-aided translation tools such as translation memories and glossaries are increasingly being hailed as indispensable tools in the quest for translation efficiency and consistency. Glossaries, for example, can be created to ensure that the same terminology is used across all translations for a particular client. Due to the innately complex nature of language, however, these tools need to be applied judiciously and with caution. Individual words and sentences are alive with meaning, full of subtle nuances and potential pitfalls for translators. When using such software, translate this remains aware of the vital importance of the human contribution and will never compromise quality for speed.

Our relationship with the client

We feel that an open line of communication between translator and client is paramount in the interests of a translation consistent with the expectations of the client. Whilst we have a wide range of specialist reference material at our disposal, both on-line and on paper, every so often a word, a phrase or, more commonly, an in-house acronym crops up of which no resource contains any mention. Sometimes the client is the sole key holder in this linguistic riddle, and will need to be contacted. Other scenarios, such as missing words or errors in the source text that result in ambiguity of meaning, or factual errors in the original, may also be a reason for contacting the client. Equally, we welcome any input from clients, whether they have a query themselves regarding the text or simply wish to enquire as to the project’s progress.
